Science

Unique among timber investment management organizations, we bring expertise in the science of plant genetics and plantation silviculture to the management of assets.

Strategies Grounded in Science

Financial returns from timberland investments are enhanced when wood products prized by the market are produced: large, straight, pest-free, fast-growing trees with desirable wood qualities. Applied genetics identifies the best trees and creates even better ones. Applied silviculture maximizes the performance of the best trees through better care and cultivation practices. Our knowledge of tree genetics and silviculture, and the skill with which it is applied to the plantations that we operate, distinguishes GreenWood Resources as the leading timberland investment manager in the industry today.

Tree Improvement Leads to Financial Return

Tree improvement contributes to increases in the financial returns from timberland investments by deploying well adapted, straight, faster-growing trees with better wood quality. Sustainability is ensured through the maintenance of broad genetic diversity within the plantations.

We use the classical plant breeding approach of parental selection, controlled crossing and reselection among segregating progenies. The process does not use genetically-modified organisms or transgene technology. Tree improvement plans are developed for each asset tailored to specific species, leveraging our vast experience in varietal development and family forestry.

In some species, such as hybrid poplar, we develop and serve our investors with our proprietary select varietals. To accomplish this, we have developed breeding populations of four economically important Populus species, base populations and production varieties of multiple intra- and inter-specific taxa, greenhouses, research equipment, and an extensive database of genetic information. With other species, such as eucalyptus, teak, gmelina, pines, hemlock or fir, we identify the best sources of the currently-available genetic material, refine that material using statistically-designed field trials, and select the best varieties or families for our fund assets.

Silvicultural Research

Proper silviculture practices guarantees sustainable wood production from our managed forest resources. We begin by matching the appropriate species with specific planting sites. The diversity of the species, and the different markets we serve, demand an intensive research program to enhance competitiveness and plantation sustainability. Our research programs address plantation density, stand nutrition and protection, water relations, and stand improvement techniques.

Our goal is to focus on improvements in yield, wood quality and plantation value. We:

  • Develop management practices for each type of forest we oversee
  • Customize treatments based on operational needs and priorities
  • Implement research findings to resolve forest management challenges
  • Preserve the long-term sustainability of the managed assets

Proprietary stand management techniques help in the profitability and sustainability of our tree growing operations. The systematic application of elite genetics and matching silvicultural techniques adds value to the assets we manage at little cost while lowering asset risk.

Technology Applications

GreenWood incorporates the latest forest science technologies and growth models in our science programs. These include near infrared spectroscopy, x-ray densitometry, wood penetrometers, plant canopy analyzers, process-based growth models and molecular marker technology.

These tools are used across our genetic selection programs for bioenergy, sawn wood, veneer, pulp and paper, and bioenergy markets, and in the evaluation of acquisition targets.
